A little over a year ago I decided on moving to Madrid in Spain. Without thinking about it too much, I moved out of my house in the Netherlands, stayed with my parents for a month, packed my suitcase and flew away. This blog is about my life in Madrid and how I moved countries.
The start of it all
Let’s start at the beginning of my journey back when I was still in The Netherlands back in 2022. I was living in the city of Utrecht and absolutely loved living there with my roomie. I lived there for 3 years, had jobs, friends and a very good social life. However, I did feel I wanted or needed something more.
The seed that I planted in my head that would eventually grow into the idea of moving to Madrid started during my freelance career. I was working at a company in the city, went to the office every day and also had nice colleagues, but the thought of building something on my own, being able to work from anywhere and whenever I wanted meant a lot to me.
Quitting my job and starting my freelance career
So I did what every sane person would do: I quit my job and started my freelance journey. Of course this wasn’t easy to do and I also used a lot of my savings during this time, but the feeling of me doing something on my own and be successful at it was simply too strong.
During this time, I also started working at a bar in the city as well so that I had some income. Throughout the day I would invest my time in finding clients and working on projects and during the nights I would work at the bar. I have met amazing people and had a lot of fun working there, but I knew from the first day that I would not work there for a very long time as I had mind set on moving to Madrid.
Taking the leap and move to Spain
Eventually, I found some clients and was earning enough money to be able to make the actual move. So I didn’t wait too long anymore. I was looking for housing and the moment I found a place to live, I packed my suitcase and went to Spain.
I was very lucky that one of my best friends and her sister were also moving to the same city and actually got to live in the same building as well. That made the transition a lot more fun and easier. Knowing people already in a foreign country is amazing, but even if they would not have been here I think I would be okay as I live in a building full of internationals who arrived on their own.
The purpose of this blog
During in past year I tried so many new things, saw and experienced a lot and I cannot wait to share all of this on my blog. The purpose of this website is to give you an insight to my life as an expat in Spain, but also to give travel tips throughout Spain. I will start writing about Madrid and gradually expand to other places.
Some subjects I am going to write about in the beginning are:
- Cost of living in Madrid

This is the start of my story of moving to Madrid in a nutshell. I hope you will have fun reading and if you have any questions about anything related to Spain, just ask 😉
